Chapter 27
Juliana’s heart was troubled. It had been ever since lunch when Sawyer had dropped that major bombshell about Seth. And then a few hours later, Seth had boldly taken her lips in a searing kiss. Ever since, she’d been riding the highs and lows of her rioting emotions like a tiny rowboat tossed on great stormy swells. And at this point, she felt a little seasick.
So really, her troubled heart should come as no surprise. She had sex with a man she had a massive crush on for years. She was pregnant. He didn’t want children. And she wanted forever. With him.
Ha! What a warped version of the truth. She leaned in closer to the mirror to assess her bloodshot eyes before she splashed cold water on her face and then blotted it dry.
She was pregnant, and Seth didn’t know. He’d made love to her with a tenderness that had branded her body, mind, and soul. Exactly how she dreamed it would be. Now that she’d had him, she couldn’t imagine life without him. And his personal aversion to fathering another child was strong enough to consent to a sharp scalpel near his manhood.
Now that was a bit more accurate.
Accurate perhaps, but not the least bit helpful.
And now she needed to tell him that she was pregnant. The longer she waited, the worse it would get. No way could she hide her growing bundle of joy indefinitely. But she wanted to ignore telling the truth for a while longer and just savor this thing they had going, stealing little kisses here and there. Maybe stealing some longer moments together to make love. Surely, they could eek out the time at least once more before she had to come clean.
A little before midnight, when her brain had made the useless circle a million times, she climbed into bed and clicked off the lamp on her nightstand just as an incoming text chimed on her cell phone. Rather than ignoring it until morning, she snatched up her phone and swiped at the screen to read the message.
Martha: He kissed me good night!!!
Thank goodness Martha hadn’t called, because there was no way Juliana could’ve hidden the turmoil in her voice.
Juliana: Yah! About time!
Juliana: Was it good?
Juliana: No! Do NOT answer that!
Martha: It was perfect.
A smiley face emoji followed by the red lip emoji dinged Juliana’s phone.
Juliana: So happy for you! Talk tomorrow!
Juliana reread the string of texts, certain she’d responded with the right words and excitement level. She really was happy for her friend’s budding relationship, so why did she feel so…bitter? It felt an awful lot like petty jealousy over Martha’s smooth sailing with Sawyer, when all the emotional upheaval Juliana was feeling could all be traced back to sleeping with Seth.
Recognizing her emotional struggle and chalking it up to her own screwed up life felt more appropriate than blaming it on her friend’s success.
As she sat on her bed in the dark with her cell phone clutched in her hands,
